From gingivitis to periodontitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum caused by bacterial plaque: red, swollen gums that bleed when brushing. At this stage, a cleaning and good brushing are enough to return to normal.

When the inflammation persists, bacteria progress under the gum and gradually destroy the ligament and bone holding the teeth: this is periodontitis. Pockets form between the gum and the tooth, roots become exposed, and teeth eventually loosen and are lost.

Signs to watch for

• Regular periodontal maintenance (every 3 to 6 months) to prevent relapse.
