What is root canal treatment?

At the centre of every tooth is the pulp, containing the nerve and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or a blow reaches the pulp, it becomes inflamed and then infected: this is the cause of severe toothache and, later, of an abscess. The procedure

• Anaesthetic, isolation of the tooth, then opening of the pulp chamber.
• Removal of the pulp, shaping and disinfection of the canals with fine instruments and antiseptic solutions.
• Sealing of the canals and closure of the tooth, temporary or permanent.
• Restoration of the tooth, usually with a crown to protect it from fracture.

Does it hurt? What happens afterwards?

Thanks to the anaesthetic the treatment is not painful; on the contrary, it relieves the toothache. Sensitivity to pressure for a few days is normal and settles with painkillers. A properly treated and restored tooth can last many years. If it fails or becomes reinfected, retreatment is possible.
