• Bleeding: bite firmly on a clean gauze for twenty minutes without removing it.

What not to do

Some habits make things worse: putting aspirin on the gum (chemical burn), lancing an abscess yourself, taking leftover antibiotics without advice, going to bed with swelling that is spreading, or ignoring pain that "went away by itself". Toothache that stops suddenly often means the nerve has died, not that the problem is solved.
